Heroes Evolved, the League of Legends ripoff that works?

The competition swirling around among game developers are getting more and more intense as every year goes by. No game is safe. One of them is League of Legends, obviously. I know that the rivalry between LoL and DOTA 2 is incredibly fierce and well-known, and that that rivalry's what gives them more and more playerbase counts. Other developers want a piece of that fame too. And that is where Heroes Evolved comes in.

It channels that "copy your homework but change some stuff to make it look different" kind of vibe. The game picked up some bits from DOTA 2 and several, or a lot, from League and snuck those two into something which is Heroes Evolved. Now that's "imitation is the highest form of flattery" taken to a whole new level.

I played it, and I must say, the transition from League to this is almost seamless. The very first thing that I noticed is that the game's interface almost looked like a mirror image of League's legacy client. From the iconic orange and blue combination of League's champion to the in-game shop UI, even the concepts behind each champion, you can definitely tell that it got ideas from League. What it borrowed from DOTA 2 are the layout of the HUD and the day/night cycle. I don't play DOTA 2 so there might be more similarities that I've missed.

What else can I say? The map feels the same, the art style is quite similar, the champions feel like they're jumbled versions of League's champs with a different name, and the overall gameplay's not that different from a typical MOBA. The lag, however, will be unbearable if you're coming from SEA (South East Asia), because SEA doesn't have a dedicated server yet. Every match can have a ping of 200 and up.

Simply speaking, if you're someone looking for something different yet the same, if ever that makes sense, then I guess Heroes Evolved is something worth trying. The game's similarities might turn other people off, but my guess is that the mere similarity of it with League might pique your interest in trying the game and see how it performs.

Heroes Evolved is available for free on PC via Steam and on mobile on certain countries.
