Dauntless

Have you ever wanted to play Monster Hunter so bad you sneakily checked the deep web for a...uh...you know? Well, worry no more, for the gaming heavens have opened up and gave us a taste of what's coming: Dauntless. It's like Monster Hunter, but it's free-to-play and is hitting Open Beta this year on PC. Yes, this 2017. You can already sign up here.

It's being developed by Phoenix Labs, a studio based in Vancouver, Canada composed of veteran developers who previously worked at BioWare, Riot Games, Capcom, and Blizzard Entertainment. Quite the team, right? Some aspects of their previous companies can be seen on the art style of the game.

The game is an online cooperative action RPG for the PC platform. In this game, you are a Slayer, an elite warrior that protects humanity by hunting giant monsters called behemoths.

According to Phoenix Labs,

"The world of Dauntless has been shattered by a cataclysmic event, creating a vast array of uncharted and majestic floating islands. Behemoths, as cunning as they are vicious, consume the land, and it’s up to the Slayers to hunt them down before they destroy what remains of the world. Slayers will explore an ever-changing frontier, brimming with verdant flora and unique wildlife."

In Dauntless, players, or in this case, slayers, can go hunt alone or join co-op parties with up to four people. Although, I think slaying a giant behemoth with three other people sounds more fun. Besides, Phoenix Labs wants the game to revolve around players working together in taking down larger and more powerful monsters.

Each behemoth encounter will be unique from the other; each brings its own unique challenges and rewards. To survive and progress, slayers collect rewards from their hunts to upgrade their weapons and armor in a crafting system.

It looks like many cool games will be coming out this year.
